Facing Fears
Ok so this might sound a bit wierd and lame, but I'm scared of flying foxes and confidence courses... or I was. When I was a kid I came off a flying fox and got knocked unconcious, and also at the same camp I swung off a rope swing on a platform of a confidence course and accidentally let go halfway down. Hence I haven't been on a confidence course or a flying fox since I was about 11.
Yeah it seems pathetic but its amazing how some tiny things can stick with you. I love mountainbiking and doing tricky downhill tracks, white water rafting, etc, but put me up in the air and its a diff story.
I'm going thru a bit of a phase of doing new things and overcoming fears... so today I went to do Tree Adventures (www.treeadventures.co.nz)... its a confidence course set in the trees at woodhill forest. My main reason for going was because I wanted to overcome my fear of confidence courses. Then I get there and what do I discover...? Every one of the 8 courses finishes with a flying fox. Bloody typical!!!
Anyway, I got to level 4 or 8 and refused to go down the flying fox for about 10 mins, lol. But I finally did it, then I pushed myself and made myself keep going. I said I wouldn't do 7 and 8 cos they're known as the "thrills and spills" course, but I fought my fair and did them, even my mates I went with were freaked at number 7s flying fox!!
I love that feeling of satisfaction knowing you've achieved something, got over a fear, etc. I'll probably still be a little freaked next time I go, but at least I know I can do it!
So kudos to anyone who dares to dream and face their fears and challenges!!!
